This Hinoki candle box is made in the traditional form of Japanese masu, which was originally used to measure rice during Feudal Japan. Today, the boxes are use for drinking sake and throwing out roasted soybeans to celebrate Setsubun (節分). Both the wax and the box are made from hinoki, which emits warmth and a subtle scent even when the candle is not in use. Hinoki is a native species of trees and can only be grown in Japan. Often referred to as Japanese cedar, the wood has an organic lemon-scented aroma. The delicate wood grain and calming fragrance enhances the sense of relaxation.
