Arita Porcelain Sesame Mortar and Pestle with Lid

Arita Porcelain Sesame Mortar and Pestle with Lid

Arita-yaki (有田焼) was founded in 1616 in the small town of Arita in Saga prefecture. As the birthplace of Japanese porcelain, Arita porcelain became highly prized in both the East and West after the 17th century. The earliest production was characterised by the delicate indigo ‘sometsuke’ (染付) underglaze on the translucent porcelain body. The glass-like texture is formed by the high-quality clay and porcelain stone ‘toseki’, which are extracted from the surrounding Izumiyama mountains. Arita porcelain also underwent major shifts in production values to better reflect the needs of ordinary citizens, hence the unadorned one-color design of the sometsuke underglaze remained a timeless signature throughout the centuries.

This contemporary range of Arita porcelainware combines tradition with minimal design and beauty. As essential tools for the modern kitchen, these modular items are designed for multi-purpose and easy use. Each piece in the collection is designed to fit elegantly into the palm of the hand and they can also be stacked for ease of storage.

This Sesame Pestle and Mortar comes with a lid to preserve content. The wooden mortar is made from maple, while the solid porcelain body offers stability and friction when crushing bigger items such as almonds.
