Earthenware Jug (M)

Earthenware Jug (M)

These Kyoto glazed jugs are made from earthenware, which is considered one of the first types of ceramic and has a raw, coarse finish to it. More porous than stoneware or porcelain, its opaque and soft body requires glazing to be watertight. These particular pieces have a delicate crackle glaze that can be seen when light reflects off its surface. A desired effect in ancient China, surface decoration of ceramics relied heavily on crackle glaze during the Song dynasty. This sought after technique later spread to other regions in Asia, specifically Japan.
