Arita-yaki (有田焼) was founded in 1616 in the small town of Arita in Saga prefecture. As the birthplace of Japanese porcelain, Arita porcelain became highly prized in both the East and West after the 17th century. The earliest production was characterised by the delicate indigo ‘sometsuke’ (染付) underglaze on the translucent porcelain body. The glass-like texture is formed by the high-quality clay and porcelain stone ‘toseki’, which are extracted from the surrounding Izumiyama mountains. Arita porcelain also underwent major shifts in production values to better reflect the needs of ordinary citizens, hence the unadorned one-color design of the sometsuke underglaze remained a timeless signature throughout the centuries.

This range of Arita tableware features the signature indigo ’sometsuke’ and orange-red glaze on white porcelain. Each piece is hand glazed by skilled craftsmen to form a subtle texture of varying brushstrokes. The white porcelain forms a highly durable, yet light body which makes it ideal for daily use. The delicate body evokes the tradition of Arita porcelain, while the symmetrical designs adds a modern touch to the collection.
