Brass Cutlery Set
Brass Cutlery Set
This range of brassware is produced in one of the oldest brass foundries in Japan. The city of Takaoka in Toyama prefecture is renowned for its metal casting techniques including copper, brass and bronze. Takaoka’s brass casting is traditionally rooted in the production of Buddhist altars and sculptural crafts in the Edo period, and its rich tradition has been passed down for many centuries to the production of daily tableware and homeware. Solid brass is characterised by a distinctive patina due to oxidization, in which the rich lustre of the brass surface will fade with use over time to reveal a warm caramel-like texture. This range has been sand-casted in a style called ‘ihada’ (crude casting surface), giving it a raw finish that is unique to each piece of brassware. This rich patina can only be acquired through time, making each piece valued items to treasure over a long period of time.
This cutlery set combines the natural beauty of brass and silver. The silver-plated heads are finely grounded to give it an exceptionally smooth texture that is pleasant to feel, while the body is crafted by hand pouring and sand casting brass to give it a contrasting raw finish that is unique to the material.
