Mino-yaki is a style of pottery produced in the eastern part of Gifu prefecture. It is home to the largest production of porcelain ware in Japan and its broad and wide-ranging pottery traditions stem back 1300 years. As the producer of more than half of Japan’s ceramic wares, the spirit of Mino-yaki is based on a functional craft which combines traditions with modern techniques to create beautiful tableware for the everyday.

Our selected range of Mino-yaki reflects the craft’s versatility which fuses local traditions with western design. The rich porcelain body is created using a translucent glaze of a light caramel-brown, which is called Ame-iro (“飴色”) in the traditional colours of Japan.

These plates feature a rectangular design that is ideal for serving a wide range of dishes. The sumi-kiri design (meaning “cutting off four corners”) is a common shape used in Japanese design and the translucency of the porcelain body gives the served dishes a luminous finish.
