Traditional Glazed Rice Bowl (Red)

Traditional Glazed Rice Bowl (Red)

This series of ceramic ware is produced in the renowned porcelain-making village of Arita in Saga prefecture. The bowls come in a range of glazes using the traditional colours of Japan, which are uniquely rooted in nature. The glazed surfaces display a beautiful interplay with light, revealing a subtle depth in colour. These ceramic rice bowls are humble in size and form, making them ideal as simple items to have for everyday use.

This ceramic bowl is made from a type of red clay called Beni Zakura, which takes its name from the Japanese camellia. This bowl uses a primitive firing technique called ‘Yakishime’ (焼き〆), in which unglazed wares are fired at high temperatures using only firewood to allow the surface to form a natural glaze.
